The Cakes
B always has at least two cakes on his birthday. For the family party, we made this crazy lego space cake. It was crazy, in part, because I'd been cooking for nearly 11 hours straight when I started which is not a good place to be in when trying to do this. Also, the guys were all at the O'Connell's closing party which meant we were child-wrangling as well. In any case, not my best work, but an adventure.
The second cake, randomly, ended up being a monkey cake for the friends party. I was tired and planning a boring round cake covered in bright star sprinkles. At about 9 o'clock, I discovered that I, apparently, no longer have two round cake pans. We took stock of the ones I did have and gave B a couple choices. He chose a monkey that we made using a very cute pan Aunt Jamie gave us recently. To my great surprise and delight it turned out very well. It actually was relatively appropriate as monkeys, or at least chimps did go to space 60 years ago so it fit with our space concept in the end.
We also had cupcakes for school and an Angel Food cake as a second cake at the friends party so everyone had plenty of choices.
The cake decorating really is a valuable reminder that to do well at something you should probably practice it more than two or three times a year. This, however, is not my passion so I think I'm ok with my where I am.
