Ten on Tuesday

1.  First up - Happy Birthday to our oldest nephew, John, whose 7th Birthday is today!  We love him so much and loved getting to spend some of the weekend with him and his family.  Happy birthday also today to Aunt Suzi -- the chef of the Rouse family!  (Our family has tons of birthdays from Jan 20-March 9 so several birthday buddies).

Photo credit goes to State Senator David Holt
 2.  We also celebrated George Washington's 283rd Birthday on Friday evening at Dust Bowl with the GW Oklahoma Alumni network (these are the kids of the alumni, obviously).  It was probably our best GW alumni event so far.  We had lots of fun, food, and great conversations.  All of the alumni present are lawyers which probably helps us find things to talk about rather easily :)
 3.  Then, after attempting and failing to go to sleep early, Brent and I woke the kids up just before 5am on Saturday for the drive to TX.  We banned electronics, books, and really anything for the first two hours in hope they would go back to sleep.  I even played their lullabye CD.  I think they got some sleep, but not enough.  Come 7am, E got to have some video for the first time and was very confused that it wasn't a touch screen. We dropped Brent off at a summer camp fair by 8:30am and were off to visit the Joneses.
 4. I really like looking down from the second story at Jamie's house.  It is beautiful and this little guy is so very curious.  He had an awesome time with his cousins and all the toys, but had to be banned from the kids sleeping room for keeping everyone awake way past bedtime (we did return him to his air mattress after he fell asleep in our bed).
 5. I had no idea we were going to John's basketball game while we were there, but it was great fun.  It was pretty fancy as grade school games go complete with a run in through a tunnel into a mostly dark gym when their name was called with pulsing music in the background!  John played a great game and the other kids behaved pretty well as spectators!

 6.  After lunch, M & B went to John's birthday party at the climbing gym.  E took a nap in the car while I went to pick up Brent and then we met them there.  Climbing was kind of hard for the kids, but they gave it a try and seemed to have a good time anyway.
 7.  This guy ate his Italian Ice in tiny bites like this for about 45 minutes.........

 8.  We made it back the next day in time for Ro's 2nd birthday party.  It was a woof woof themed party and full of fun, big dogs and little dogs, black and white dogs, etc.... It was also nice to see my siblings who I have seen very little this month!
9.  Monday, everyone went to school and then an unexpected amount of snow arrived.  These two loved playing in it and helped me clear off the driveway.  B joined them when he came home and they all rejoiced about having a snow day today.

10.  For the first time in this training cycle I missed a run --- shocking I know given how busy and exhausting my weekend was.  I was back on schedule today, but it is shocking how much I do feel it when there is a gap in my training.  Sigh.  It is going OK.  As usual, running is a largely psychological game for me.  That said, last Thursday's run was totally awesome so there will be good days.

This weekend I am celebrating my birthday with family and friends.  Thanks to all you readers who follow our journey and encourage us in this crazy life.  Love you!

Photo Walk + Cousin Time

As I've mentioned, I am taking the Lens of Joy class with Ali Edwards.   Part of Week 2 was taking a photo walk and trying different design type elements.  This means we were looking for things like lines, texture, movement, where the focus is in the frame, etc. We were going to Texas for just about 24 hours and it seemed like a great time to get extra photos of our newest nephew, Jamie's family, and their new home.  So here are a few of my favorites.  Yes, I took WAY more than I usually do and this is a small percentage of them, but I'm oh so glad for these images and for using my "big" camera."  It was also really helpful that their house has great light for most of the day!
Here is the new guy, Grayson.  Here we're also looking at lines and texture and getting him close to a good focus area in the frame.
I like this more pulled back shot with almost everyone in it just doing their thing together.
M loves Grayson and was with him a lot.  Here she is talking to him and Jamie.
Brent "might" have gotten tired of having his picture taken from all angles, but glad I found some I like.  I want more pictures of my dad so I try to make sure our kids have lots of pictures of him.
Believe it or not, this is not his Batman costume, but one he immediately found at their house.
One thing we're working on is "framing." Here the door is the frame. I took this picture quite a few times trying to get the frame, light and clarity right.  I'm not sure I got it, but close.
I believe this may be one of only two pictures of me during the weekend.  Oops.
They have a neat 2-story house that you can look over into the living room.  This is Carl, shot from above.
I started taking this picture with only three kids in it, but suddenly there were five and it was awesome.
These two spent a lot of time together and with ipads.
Hmmm This one probably needs to be cropped in, but looking for movement.
M loved borrowing my scarf, but wasn't as happy about how the sharing rotation was going.  Sharing is hard.  She is beautiful.
Looking up at our happy girl.
Look how close their hair color is now? (This is B, John, and Matthew).  Two of these three used to have very light blond hair, but soon they will match :)

One last one with this guy.  He had an awesome time and loved getting to spend the night in Matthew's room.  It was his first sleep over with just him and one cousin in a room.  They did great.

It was a really fun, relaxed day.  Because it was so cold and Brent had the car for part of the day we just stayed at home, played, ate, talked, watched a little football and enjoyed time together.

Family Vacation 2014: Day 4

So, after Day 3, we went home for three days and then went back on the road for another three day vacation. This time to Dallas!  Brent was attending some meetings for about 1/2 our time, which was sad, but did make our hotel stay free.

Brent's sister Jamie and her boys joined us for the first stop of our adventure - Perot Museum of Nature and Science.   The museum is fairly new, pricey, and crowded.  That said, they had some cool exhibits, lots of hands on options and very current technology to try out.

Brent had a great time with the microscopy and basically lots of opportunities to teach all the kids just a little science.
The first couple rooms we were in were biology related.  They learned about basics like cells, but also about their bodies.
John and M in front of slices of human bodies.
Here they are looking at the veins in their hands.
Dr. Richards explaining the "family tree" of species on earth --- with magnifying glasses as there are so many included.
B spent a long time working on this helicopter/auto-pilot simulation.  The idea was to balance the loads to get the helicopter to lift off, but it also demonstrated some of what the auto pilot does and some tricky physics of helicopters --- This was in the robots/technology section next door to the bodies/biology area.

Brent & E both helped with the helicopter project.
Meanwhile, Brent & M began programming a robot to drive through a maze.
They got more help :)
They tested it out and found there was a problem or two, but still quite fun. The next section was a brief foray in to space, but it was dark so no good photos.  Then we briefly went to the regular dino exhibit before it was time for our timed tickets to the special "World's Largest Dinosaurs exhibit," which was definitely not worth the extra $30 we paid to visit it.  It was two small and one large room that had a few neat things in them, but not really that many, at least not for our crew who mostly dug in the sand...which we can do for free.
Requisite blurry picture with dino model that is too large for the frame.

The glowing lungs in the background talk were part of the explanation of how blood and oxygen made it up the very long necks of these huge dinos.

Digging for "bones" in the sand table.
E asking a question about dino skulls.
Dr. Richards exploring and explaining.
And... then off to the children's area where we spent a solid hour.  E spent most of the time sorting play food.  The bigger boys climbed quite a bit.  M flitted around to various areas, but mostly in the farm/veg area with E.  There were, of course, a few snakes, which is what Brent & Matthew are discussing here.
The adults rested, talked, and plotted the next adventures.  The Jones crew headed home, and we took in one more exhibit about the science of sports.
This wall was pretty cool and lit up wherever we touched it.  Inside, there was another race thing (like in the Power Play exhibit at the OK Science Museum).  Then a lot of exhibits about sports medicine and nutrition.  We, of course, had horrible nutrition during this trip, but learned a lot about it??? (Does that count?)
There was a fun sports simulator where Brent threw a football and you could run the video of him doing it next to the video of a professional quarterback.
The kids mostly loved seeing Daddy on TV :)
B's favorite part of the museum were these dancing water molecules in the lobby. They were cute, but might give you an idea of why I feel like this was kind of overpriced for the content. The price for us was only a few dollars shy of a yearly membership at the OK Science Museum....

Outside - there were some cool jumping frog statues, which we were instructed not to climb on or jump off of, which was ridiculous so we let the kids do both :)

E loved them and tried climbing and jumping all different ways.

The bigger kids know a photo op when they see one and posed happily.

M also wanted to demo her tree pose. I didn't quite capture this, but love the shadows and dance here.

I attempted, fairly unsuccessfully, to capture some pictures of all three of them all weekend.  Here are three early attempts :)

Brent's meetings were at the DFW Grand Hyatt -- the bonus was being able to watch the planes take off before bedtime :)

Where we went:
Perot Museum of Nature and Science

Where we ate:
El Fenix
Snacks from the airport shop and our stash for dinner as we were a bit stuck, and the kids were tired crazy... the kids loved it.

Where we stayed:
Grand Hyatt DFW - paid for by Intel as part of the meetings Brent was attending. Lovely hotel all around.
