National Day of Listening

I love Story Corp on NPR. I don't get to hear it much, but it used to be a fixture of my commute and often brought me to tears. For those of you not familiar with it, it is oral histories being collected around the country that will be stored at the Library of Congress. Short excerpts are played each week on NPR's morning broadcast. There is even a book and CD available now that Brent got me for Christmas last year.

This year, they are hosting National Day of Listening on Friday, November 28th and offering some tools to get you started with your own oral history:

"This holiday season, ask the people around you about their lives — it could be your grandmother, a teacher, or someone from the neighborhood. By listening to their stories, you will be telling them that they matter and they won’t ever be forgotten. It may be the most meaningful time you spend this year.

To get started, download our free Do-It-Yourself Guide."

Consider taking some time this Holiday week to capture your family stories whether it be audio, video, photographs, or writing up later in a space like this stories you learned from your family this week. I think you'll be glad you did. I know we treasure the written memories we have like that and often wish we would have done more of it when my Grandma Dotter or Grandpa Blakley were still alive. Just food for thought. Have a great day!
