My Mom recently gave me The Duchess of Whimsy as a birthday present. It is a wonderful children's book full of beauty and grace. I think my favorite parts are the lovely illustrations, but the overarching story of appreciating difference and taking time to understand people that are not the same as you is an extremely valuable one. Being fascinated by food, I particularly liked the food imagery found both in the text and in the accompanying illustrations.
The book is described as a fairy tale and is, but in a more modern happy vein than some of the classics. Overall, I think the little touches and hidden bits in each page such as finding the Duchess' fairies make this a book I'll want to read and enjoy more often and one of the rare ones that is as enjoyable for me as it is for them. My kids may still be a bit young, but B paid rapt attention during the every time that we've read it together thus far. M just tried to eat the pages, but that's her normal stance on books these days.
This book made it onto my wishlist thanks to a Cool Mom Picks recommendation and I'm glad to recommend it to you as well to add just a bit of Whimsy to your Thursday as I know mine could use some.
