Summer Living (continues)

Once I wrote about our experiencing summer activities on Monday I somehow felt like there was added incentive to keep going so, as usual we've forged right ahead.  Tuesday was painting the sidewalk and continuing the bug collecting.  Wednesday and Thursday we added picking vegetables from the garden and eating them very fresh.  In happy news, it appears Lady M is a big fan of squash too.  B was convinced to eat the fried squash when told it was chips.  After which, he liked it also, but informed me they were chicken chips, not squash.  Now that we're starting the squash a day season we'll get to try them in all forms.

Wednesday evening, I planned another summer adventure.  The Hoppers and Wainrights had mentioned that they really enjoyed some "sprayground"/Splash Park visits lately and, as we hadn't been in awhile, I added it to the list.  I packed us a picnic and when the kids woke up from their naps, off we went to the nearest one we could find. When last we visited this park, B was about 18 months old as we were almost the only ones there.  This time it was later in the evening so many more people were out.  I think both kids actually had a great time. Lady M was quite brave about traipsing through the various areas and trying new things even with lots of big kids running around.  B, in stereotypical boy fashion, seemed to focus on the water cannons, right, obviously. We would take little time outs to eat our picnic in stages.  Even Lady M knew where to go to get food when she wanted.  It was very cute, fun and everyone was very friendly.  Then it was time to head home for our frozen yogurt pop end to the day. (This entails freezing squeezeable yogurt and is very popular here just now).

Our return marked the low point in my summer fun plan as when Brent returned home B could not tell him what we'd done that evening.  Granted, I know they are too little to remember these outings in the long run, but I thought they might remember them for the better part of the hour.  I literally pulled the towel I was holding over my head and screamed--- which M thought was hilarious. Right.  This after weeks of no or little childcare and a very demanding 10 month old did result in some need for therapy with Brent later, but we pulled it back together and reminded ourselves that B's three.

Thursday's activity was story time at the Edmond Library as part of the Metro Library's "Splash Into Reading" program.  Both M and B are signed up for the reading challenge (yes, seriously).  They apparently get to be read to and for each 8 books, 8 hours OR 800 pages reach a goal and get various prizes.  We probably read 8 books most days so I think we'll be fine.

Today, there was a guest singer/storyteller there telling stories and singing songs about water. It was pretty good, but on the long side.  Neither kid could take sitting there for the full hour so we departed slightly early when the natives started getting too restless. We went home and made cookies before some playing in the hose time and dashing to Walgreens for meds to treat B's swollen red ear.  The evening was Zumba for Mama followed by snow cones (of course) and then dinner for M and Mama made of veggies from the garden. Very nice. (Brent was/is out late tonight at Shakespeare in the Park with his students).

I'm glad we've tried all these things and still have several ideas in the stash for when I return from DC.  Next Thursday morning, for instance, we're going to see the Children's Theater production of Old MacDonald Had a Farm at the Library which should be good. We also have plans for fireflies (after my mom gets back from STL) and fireworks at some point.  Also, we really should get some Popsicles around here as that seems an essential summer treat. I'd love to hear about your summer adventures and welcome any more recommendations for our list. Hope you had a great week!
