Valentine Penant Banner

Since I didn't go on the DC trip, I decided to try some Valentines craft ideas.  I started with my very first Banner project inspired by all the various banners I've been seeing on Scrapbooking/Crafting blogs of late.  This one went to decorate B's classroom at MDO for their Valentine's Day party on Wednesday, but I'm thinking of making a version for our house as well. It was very simple and inexpensive and I love the results and better still B got to help and play with glitter!

All you really need to make a banner of your own is some paper, scissors and string or ribbon.  The basic concept is cutting out shapes and attaching them to the string/ribbon/twine.  You can take it a step further by adding embellishments, text, words, pictures, other shapes, and more.  Here are a couple sites with cute banners for inspiration.

Dear Lizzy - two posts in a row have neat banners. I love hers!

Little Birdie Secrets: Love this tutorial and the finished product!

Below are the actual materials and process I used. I did not purchase anything for this project and just use what we had on hand in our craft supplies. (Or, you can skip my text version and watch the video of Heidi Swapp making hers here).

Base materials
Three sheets of 8.5 x 11 cardstock
Printer
Scissors
Raffia
Ribbon/Fibers
Stapler

Embellishments:

Bazzill Cardstock in Passionate (really any pink/red/white/cream or other cardstock would work)
Stickles  for some sparkle, glitter + glue would work well- We used diamond, silver and gold
Glue Stick
Valentines tags -we used some tags from this paper that I've been using in lots of pages/projects lately.
Letters - I used Thickers for the letters here and covered them with silver glitter glue)

Steps:
First, I printed out three copies of the Valentine Banner.
  1. B and I painted all over the pages with stickles spreading the glitter all over in all three colors. (Great fun!).
  2. Punch out twice as many small hearts as you have pennants.
  3. We left it to dry for just a little while.
  4. Cut out all the pennant shapes along the black lines
  5. Cut two matching lengths of raffia and one of fiber/ribbon (you could just use one, but I was looking for some interesting texture and a bit more strength).
  6. Spread the pennant pieces evenly along the strands and staple them in place.
  7. Glue small hearts over the staples (so two hearts per pennant)
  8. Add Letters and other embellishments including adding any glitter or glue to these embellishments that you may prefer.
  9. Test it to see if it hangs well and flatten any pieces that have curled -- NOTE - I learned the hard way that card stock works better than regular paper if you are putting glitter glue on it as the plain paper pieces tended to curl much more than the card stock pieces.
