Day 17: Parties for Baby Jesus

One of the great things about B attending Mother's Day Out (MDO) at St. Elijah's has been the focus on the "reason for the season" as well as cool traditions grounded in religion that surround Christmas.  Last week, St. Nicholas came to visit the kids after they had learned his story.  He looked like the icons you would see complete with miter (Brent said he looked a bit like the pope dressed up as Santa).  The classes each took a picture with him as did each kid.  B, predictably, looks more than a bit wary about this situation, but we've come to expect exactly this photo from him in new situations so it is sweet in its familiarity. The whole set-up was doubly good as it spared us a trip to the mall.  (I find that I'm fine with M missing her visit with Santa or St. Nicholas this year as B didn't go until he was nearly three and she doesn't really get it yet.)

This week has brought two more days of parties and crafts at school.  Wednesday was the class party styled as a birthday party for baby Jesus.  We brought Rice Krispie Treats covered in a melange of Christmas sprinkles (B's choice) and a big sack of presents for other babies that need some basics like bottles and clothes this Christmas.  We gathered our presents from around the house together.  They were mostly from clothes M never wore or things I'd bought on sale and put in my present closet, but B gave away some toys too.  I chose to stretch and give away just a few things more than was comfortable as we are so very blessed (and really not much cost as we owned all these things already).  Chapel focused on baby Jesus' birthday and B tells me (can't vouch that this is true) that he was the best singer of the week in Chapel for a second week in a row (he actually was last week which was very cool).

Today, was the third iteration of celebrations.  Fridays at MDO include a few different kids as it is an optional day.  I appreciated that they included these kids in a celebration too.  Better still, it was PJ & Pizza day, both of which we love.  B recently fell in love with a pair of red, fleece, "pirate", footie PJs.  He will almost not take them off and puts them back on as soon as possible.  LOVES THEM.  It was pure bliss that he got to wear them to school for the last day before break and have pizza and a movie with his friends.  He also brought home some wonderful crafts, ornaments, and a "Handy" Christmas book featuring different Christmas symbols made out of his hand print (reindeer, bell, santa, snowman, etc...).  It was a fun conclusion to a great semester.
